Synopsis
Sheryl Bradshaw, a single woman looking for a suitor on a popular 1970s TV series, chooses charming bachelor Rodney Alcala, unaware that behind the man’s gentle facade lies a deadly secret. IMDb has compiled a list of some notable 2024 films directed by women. Some of Sheryl’s unpleasant experiences as an aspiring actress mirror Anna Kendrick’s own. The comment about Sheryl’s breasts is “drawn literally from something that happened to me when I was 19.” The coins stolen from the laundry room are modern quarters.

One of the problems is that I didn’t know it was based on true events. So I kept waiting for the movie to “start” because it seemed very slow from start to finish and the “big thing” never actually happened.
But I think there’s only so much they could do to dramatize the true story
Overall it’s well acted and directed, but I still think they could have written it in a way that would have made it a bit more engaging. However, my disappointment mostly comes from the fact that not knowing it was a true story, I thought it would go in a completely different direction once it got to the dating show part. Like she somehow found out one of the guys was a serial killer and through witty questions made him reveal himself; in fact, I wish it was like that for most of the movie, kind of like the psychological thriller Slumdog Millionaire meets the finale of A Few Good Men . And in my head, it sounds like a really cool movie I’d want to watch.

Unfortunately, with that in mind, this one turned out to be a slightly less exciting ride for me. The final season of What We Do in the Shadows is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
