Synopsis
The city of New Rome is pitted against a duel between Caesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who advocates for a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was put on the back burner partly because of its financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after shooting 30 hours of second-unit footage and holding a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco, and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) “foreshadowed” the attacks.

Adam Driver and Nathalie Emmanuel had no chemistry whatsoever
This film reminded me of The Room and Adam Driver’s performance was more like Tommy Wiseau’s. Awkward dialogue and a terrible script that couldn’t fake it. Since it was shot during a pandemic, I wonder if they ever met before they were cast or if they were just voted off over Zoom. I bet Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Aubrey Plaza will all get Razzie nominations and might even win.
It was pretentious, superficial, and a waste of money
I have never seen a group of actors so “talented” and lacking in self-awareness that they embarrassed themselves and made us question their true talent. I walked out before the finale because I couldn’t stand the bad dialogue, it was like the actors were talking to a wall and had just learned their lines 5 minutes before. That opening speech in Hamlet was some of the worst I’ve ever seen. The photography looked like a 2003 TV movie edited on Windows 95.
It’s not even that bad, it’s good because I couldn’t follow the plot because it was all confusing
