I was thrilled to see this after learning that it’s just two guys taking a cab from JFK to a block in midtown Manhattan that I know like my social security number, in real time. Such a premise is impossible to pull off. Of course, they get stuck behind a serious accident, which gives them the time they need to chat and increases the running time. I saw the film in a New York theater with a free audience, with a loud-mouthed woman shouting back at the screen (it’s New York). Most of us seemed to love it. As theater lovers in America’s theater capital, it would be marginally more suited to the stage. But it works well on screen, too. The poster didn’t portray Sean Penn as a typical angry middle-aged guy, so I wasn’t expecting violence, and there isn’t any. It’s just talk, with a huge reveal 90% through that I didn’t see coming. Penn has been a Broadway actor himself, and he certainly handles everything that’s asked of him and is superb. In other words, the usual quality. Johnson is an actress I dismissed as a nepo baby chick who looks great in bikinis (TLD) and Adam suit (FSG). I wasn’t expecting much acting here, since there’s only one guy she can play after and there are no sets. And she’s a producer, with all the power that brings. But she delivers, and I found her mostly believable. I didn’t understand why a programmer would have such flashy nails, especially coming back from two weeks in Oklahoma. It was always distracting. Now that I think about it, it may be a gift to herself after her OK rigors. They make up for everything. And she pays her cab driver with a fancy tip that left us all speechless. I had a very good time, against all expectations. It was free, but I was honest.
