TV Shows You Should Drink (2023). I read the Hughes trilogy many years ago and enjoyed the books immensely. When I randomly browsed IMDB and found THE SHELF, I was immediately intrigued. I see quite a mixed bag of opinions and I can relate to some of them, here’s my take on the first season. First, I love dystopian literature!
It is not an adaptation in the sense that it follows the story
The dystopian genre offers a unique psychological perspective on human nature in hypothetical scenarios. My love for the trilogy was strengthened because Hughes managed to develop Orwell’s ideas within a hypothesis related to the modern world. Representing the development of the human psyche in dystopian scenarios is a challenging task. I think Hughes did a great job, SILO captures most of these aspects in a refreshing way. It is based on the books, but of course it has to adapt to viewers in a fast-paced world.
The acting is phenomenal for the main characters
Still, the series manages to capture the atmosphere of a society living in a silo. Unlike the shallow storytelling in other series, “SILO” has a great combination of character development and atmospheric focus. The only problem I have with the show is the lack of atmospheric development. They spend a lot of time on screen chasing and catching Juliet. They lack the atmospheric development of the silo as a society.
